The author sure has no qualms with killing of or maiming anyone. I felt as if during this book I wasn't as connected to some of the characters as I should have been. Tom was still a great person but he seemed to find himself down more than up. It really seemed as if he was off his game. I suppose in the last years of his apprenticeship he will start to be more what he should. Although, it seems that this series is setup for a few too many books still to come.
